On World Food Day, October 16, hundreds of members of Montreal's Jewish community joined 80,000 other Canadians and more than 116 million people around the world to Stand Up against poverty. Organized by Agence Ometz, this show of solidarity was intended to urge world leaders to live up to international commitments to end poverty in our lifetime. Through their participation, ordinary citizens succeed in expressing that poverty is unacceptable and in voicing the demand that action be taken immediately. Last year's Stand Up set a Guiness World Record for the largest single coordinated mobilization. It is hoped that this year's event will eclipse that achievement.
