Here are some common definitions to help you decide your status:
Certificat de Sélection du Québec; it is a first step in the immigration process (*) and one must receive it from the government of Quebec before applying for permanent residence in Canada.
(*) skilled worker and/or business class in Quebec
Permanent Residence; this is a permanent status in Canada which allows a person to live, work and study in Canada on a permanent basis. A permanent resident in Canada has the same rights as Canadian citizens, except the right to vote and to obtain a passport.
Certificat d’Acceptation du Québec; this document is needed if you want to work and/or study in Canada in the province of Quebec. One must apply to Immigration Quebec for a CAQ before applying for a work and/or student permit from Immigration Canada.
NB. CAQ and study permits are not mandatory for any course of 6 months or less.
Work permit; A document issued by Immigration Canada which allows its holder to work in Canada (for a limited time).
Study permit; A document issued by Immigration Canada which allows its holder to study in Canada (for a limited time).
