Biography - Denis Coderre, Mayor of Montréal
The Honourable Denis Coderre was elected 44th mayor of Montréal on November 3, 2013, beginning a new chapter in a political career spanning more than 30 years.
He took an active role in federal politics from the 1980s, first as Chairman of the Young Liberals Committee and member of the Steering Committee of the Federal Liberal Association in the Bourassa riding. He was first elected to the House of Commons in 1997 and sat as the MP for Bourassa for 16 consecutive years, until leaving federal politics in June 2013 to enter the race for Mayor of Montréal.
He promised to put the city back on the right track and make it a vital metropolis on both the national and international stages: a city of which all residents could once again be proud.
Mayor Coderre is also President of the Montréal Metropolitan Community, and in December 2015 he became President of Metropolis, the main international organization of cities and metropolitan areas with more than a million inhabitants.
Denis Coderre graduated in Political Science from the University of Montréal and holds an Executive MBA degree from the University of Ottawa. In 2005 he was awarded the rank of Commander of the Order of la Pléiade of the Organisation internationale de la Francophonie, which recognizes people who have distinguished themselves in serving the organization's ideals.
Born on July 25, 1963, he is married to Chantale Renaud. The couple has two children: Geneviève and Alexandre.
