Building upon 150 years of proud service to the community, Ometz was created in April 2008 from the merger of Jewish Employment Montreal (JEM), Jewish Family Services (JFS) and Jewish Immigration Aid Services (JIAS). Ometz is an integrated agency offering a unique blend of services that span the entire lifecycle. Our promise is to be a source of strength to those experiencing a period of vulnerability in their lives.
In 1863, when there were fewer than 1,000 Jews in Montreal, a group of community leaders gathered in a room over a store on Great St. James Street in Montreal and established the Young Men's Hebrew Benevolent Society. Little did they realize they were drafting the blueprint for what eventually would become Jewish Family Services (JFS).
A rising tide of immigration to Canada—due to many newcomers fleeing their countries of birth and then risking deportation upon arrival—prompted the establishment of Jewish Immigrant Aid Services in 1922. Over the years, JIAS has helped hundreds of thousands of Jewish immigrants navigate the immigration process and establish new lives in Canada.
In 1945, in response to the needs of returning Canadian war veterans and displaced persons arriving from Europe, who were seeking employment, Jewish Employment Montreal (JEM) was founded. Providing a wide range of services to both job seekers and employers, JEM became a Montreal leader in employment and placement.
Currently, more than 13,000 people a year turn to Ometz seeking to enhance their quality of life. Whether they are coping with family breakdown or mental illness, struggling to make ends meet, seeking work or settling in Montreal, Ometz offers a continuum of services for the whole family.
