It’s a special year for us.

This year marks the 10th anniversary that we merged three best in class agencies (Jewish Immigrant Aid Services, Jewish Employment Montreal, Jewish Family Services) into one single agency.

It happened during a period of great change as the community began the process of re-evaluating and re-visioning how best to deliver critical social services. Then in April 2008, Dr. Mitch Shiller was named the first President of what became known as Ometz. He provided steady leadership during a period of innovation and transition, ensuring that the first year following the merger was a success. He was able to both build bridges and mend fences, as necessary, in establishing Ometz as a consolidated entity, and ten years on, we can say we are stronger than ever.

In an effort to recognize his distinguished leadership, I am pleased to announce that we have created the Dr. Mitch Shiller Tribute Fund — with all proceeds of the fund going to support programs for children and youth at-risk. The Fund will create a lasting legacy of Dr. Shiller’s contributions at Ometz and go to a cause that is close to his heart.

Lastly, as we celebrate our 10-year anniversary, we can’t forget our roots. It may be a decade since our merger, but this year also marks an impressive 155 years of service to the community. We have a rich history and an even more promising future to look forward to. Our plan for 2018 is to celebrate these milestones with our growing Ometz family and we sincerely hope you’ll join us.
