The ABC's of Starting a Business: Financing

ProMontreal Entrepreneurs and PME MTL present The ABC's of Starting a Business training series*. This 3-part workshop series will provide participants with a base line of information of things to consider and know when starting a business. This workshop will provide participants with a baseline of information of things to consider and know about financing a business.

The training series will cover:

  • The Business Plan: This workshop will focus on how to write a business plan.
  • Financing: This workshop will provide participants with a baseline of information of things to consider and know about financing a business.
  • Legal Considerations of Starting a Business: This workshop will provide participants with a base line of information of things to consider and know about business law.

Biography of presenters:

Kurt Houghton

Kurt Houghton holds a Bachelor of Arts with distinction in environmental studies from McGill University and an executive MBA from Université du Québec à Montréal with a specialization in collectively owned enterprises. He has over fifteen years of cooperative and non-profit management & administration experience and more than five years of entrepreneurial consulting and coaching. These experiences allow him to appreciate the complementary roles of good governance and efficient management in a context of limited resources. His collaborations with different Québec social economy financing organizations have allowed him to make his clients' project visions and goals a reality through customized financing solutions. With a passion for social justice and local economic development, Kurt puts people first because no organization can develop without a satisfied clientele and well supported staff.

Katherine Korakakis

Katherine has spent most of her life working alongside start-ups in various verticals. For 10 years, she was responsible for the development of entrepreneurial initiatives and projects under the auspices of the Youth Entrepreneurship Challenge, a Youth Secretariat program of the government of Quebec. She has authored and co-authored guidebooks on entrepreneurship education. Katherine first developed her passion for building businesses when she co-founded an entrepreneurial training event for girls called Glambition. She was instrumental in the development of the first National Entrepreneurship Day for the province of Quebec. Katherine has served on the Boards of numerous corporations and currently is the vice-president of PMEMTL Centre-Ouest and president of EPCA. She sits on the investment committees of PME MTL Centre and PME MTL Centre-Ouest. These entities are the decision making bodies with regards to business financing with the city of Montreal. Katherine is the Manager of Entrepreneurship at Ometz an early stage VC fund and entrepreneurship program that invests in multiple verticals. The fund has a social business model and has been around for 20 years.
* While it is not required, we highly recommend you attended and register for the entire series, in order to get a complete picture of what there is to know when starting a business. Workshops will be held in English, with questions & answers in English and French.
